While buying a guitar, it is a very common thing that people often get confused while choosing among the various and different kinds of guitars available in the market. Though, one should always try to choose a guitar of his/her own choice, guitars of different shapes, sizes, cuts, sound and designs generally create confusion in the minds of the buyers. Depending upon the shape, size and types of strings used in the guitar, there are basically two kinds of guitar. They are electric guitars and acoustic guitars. They are:
These guitars are the most commonly used guitars and they also come under the category of being the most traditional guitars. They are generally made up of thin wood. The acoustic guitars are large and hollow which do not require amplification from any external source. This type of guitar is more preferable to be played in front of a small audience. Although, acoustic guitars are more preferred to play folk music, but they can also be used to play any kind of music. Acoustic guitars are also classified into different categories depending upon the various different features. They are mentioned as follows:
- Steel acoustic guitar
- Bass acoustic guitar
- Classical acoustic guitar
- Resonator acoustic guitar
The detailed description of each one of the type is discussed below:
Steel Acoustic Guitars
There is a different way in which steel acoustic guitars are played. One requires a special training in order to play these guitars. It can be either kept on the stands while playing or the player can also place it across his/her knees and then play it horizontally. The two basic types of steel guitars are pedal steel guitar and lap steel guitar. Hawaiian guitar is also a name given to steel guitar as the playing technique of this guitar was discovered in Hawaii.
Bass Acoustic Guitars
Tuning of a bass guitar is a bit difficult than others due to the thick and long strings present in this guitar. There are two kinds of bass guitar available. One has 4 strings and the other has 6 strings. The guitar with 4 strings is more common than the stringed bass guitars. Bass of the rhythm is generated using these guitars. Electric bass guitars are more commonly used than acoustic bass guitars.
Gentle and warm sound is produced by these guitars as their strings are of nylon and the neck of the guitar is wider in comparison to the other available types. These classical guitars are more commonly used to play classical music. Spanish guitars or nylon string guitars or concert guitars are some other names given to the classical guitars.
Resonator Acoustic Guitar
Resophonic guitar is also a name given to resonator acoustic guitar. It mainly increases the volume of the sound produced by the traditional acoustic guitar. Metal, instead of wood is used to make the resonators of the guitar that generates the sound. They can be played in the style of the steel guitar with a square neck. It can also be played in the style of the classical guitar with a round neck.
In order to hear the sound, these guitars need amplification. These solid or semi solid bodied guitars have longer necks. To amplify the vibrations generated, they are connected to the amplifiers. Tuning and generating a variety of tunes can be done by using the control knobs present on these guitars. Pressing the strings of an electric guitar requires lesser force which makes it more comfortable to be played and easier to tune. Rock, pop, blues and jazz music can be played very well by using electric guitars.
Depending upon the various features of electric guitars, they are classified as under:
- Electric acoustic guitars
- Solid body electric guitars
- Semi acoustic electric guitars
- Chambered body electric guitars
The detailed descriptions of these guitars are given as follows:
Electric Acoustic Guitars
Electric acoustic guitars are indeed acoustic guitars. They are just connected with a mike or a pickup so that the body vibrations which are produced by the guitars can be amplified. This type of guitar contains a number of various types of pickups. These guitars do not make use of the regular pickups given in electric guitars which make it different from semi acoustic guitar. Body vibration is captured more than the string vibration by the pickups in these guitars.
Solid body electric guitars are totally solid unlike the acoustic guitars that are hollow. This type of guitar does not depend upon vibrations for sound. Amplifiers, pickups and speakers are the components upon which solid body guitars depend. They are mainly made up of hardwood. Cleaner sound reproduction can be achieved in solid body guitars as string vibration is the only thing which is responsible for the sound reproduction.
Semi Acoustic Electric Guitars
To achieve more acoustic sound of the guitar, the body of the semi acoustic guitar has a hollow. They are different from acoustic guitars and are made up of thin sheets of wood. String vibration and body vibration is responsible for the reproduction of sound for which pickups are used. A plain tone is produced by this type of guitars and blues music can be predominantly played using such guitars. Unlike true acoustic guitars, they are not too loud, but according to the need, pickup can be unplugged or turned off.
This kind of guitar has chambers which are hollowed out and are made up of solid wood. These hollow chambered guitars make them lighter than the solid guitars. A blend of a sound produced by both acoustic and electric guitars can be generated using these guitars.
